Managing health and safety risks in the workplace is an important part of your job as a manager or supervisor. Managers need to complete risk assessments so they are aware of workplace dangers, and then put measures in place to control and mitigate them. The good news is, with effective health and safety management training, taking such action doesn't have to be complicated.

Our Managers Overview of Health and Safety course follows a fictional manager, 'Lewis', as he completes a full risk assessment in the office. Hazards are identified and dealt with accordingly and further actions planned for the future.

In addition to this course, we also offer a collection of health and safety microlearning courses that managers may find useful to refresh their memory or roll out to their employees. Microlearning is a fantastic addition to your health and safety training policy, since it allows users to soak up key learning principles in short five minute bursts. By condensing information into just the key points, learners can acquire new skills in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee.

PDCA health and safety management system

What is the PDCA health and safety management system?

A useful health and safety management system is to remember the four steps: plan, do, check, act (PDCA).

Alongside demonstrating the PDCA system at work, then, our health and safety management course goes into detail about the legislation behind health and safety policy documents and explains what ought to be included when writing one. The course encourages managers to consider the types of emergencies that might occur in their working environment and asks them to put a health and safety plan in place for each.

During the 'plan' stage, a health and safety policy should be put in place by management and necessary training arranged for employees (we recommend online health and safety training, naturally!). During the 'do' stage, managers may wish to install protective measures or equipmentin the workplace, and employees should complete their mandatory training. To fulfil your 'check' requirements, managers are expected to check that their health and safety management actions are being carried-out and may even measure the performance of their employees' training by asking them to complete assessments and quizzes that monitor their understanding. Finally, managers are expected to 'act'. If additional training or equipment is required following your health and safety audits, assessments, and reviews, then it is the manager's responsibility to implement these in a timely fashion.
